Child psychology

Children express difficulties differently than adults. A child psychologist connects with their world to help both child and parents.

What is Child psychology?

Children face their own psychological challenges, from anxiety and school problems to ADHD, autism and the impact of family changes like divorce. A child psychologist specialises in developmental psychology and provides assessment and treatment tailored to the child's age.

Child psychology is always family-oriented. Parents are closely involved, because children's wellbeing is inseparable from their family context. Changes in parenting can have a powerful impact on a child's recovery.

Evidence base: CBT adapted for children has strong evidence for anxiety, depression and disruptive behaviour. Parent training also has a robust evidence base for behavioural difficulties.

How does it work?

Age-appropriate work

A child psychologist uses play, drawing, storytelling and other developmentally appropriate methods to help children explore and express their inner world.

Parents as partners

Parents receive guidance on how to support their child, understand their behaviour and create the conditions at home that help recovery.
